Apocynaceae

Native Region

East Asia and Australia

Growth Rate

Slow

Origin + Story

Also sold as Hindu Rope, Krinkle Kurl, or Rope Hoya. All the same compact, twisted-leaf cultivar of Hoya carnosa.

The species is native to East Asia and Australia, where it grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees and rocks. The compact, twisted-leaf form is a naturally occurring mutation that has been cultivated for decades.

Tightly curled, waxy leaves stacked along trailing vines. The plant looks knotted and rope-like, which is exactly the appeal. Clusters of pink, fragrant star-shaped flowers when happy.

Grows well on high shelves, in hanging planters, with slow collectors and anyone with patience.

Detailed care

Light

Bright, indirect. A touch of morning sun is welcome and may encourage flowers.

Watering

Wait until the soil is dry. Hoyas store water in their thick leaves and resent saturation.

Humidity

Average to slightly elevated is plenty.

Soil

Chunky and fast-draining. Orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir.

Feeding

Light feeding monthly during spring and summer.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering, almost always.

  • No flowers: Not enough light. Hoyas need bright conditions to bloom.

  • Don't cut the spurs: Flowers return from the same peduncles year after year. Removing them removes future blooms.
