Summer Watering Mistakes to Avoid

Summer is the season when plants grow fastest, light is most intense, and watering frequency naturally increases. It is also the season when well-intentioned overwatering does the most damage.

Mistake 1: Watering on a Fixed Schedule

A week of overcast days followed by intense sun means your plant's water needs can shift dramatically within the same month. Check the soil every time.

Mistake 2: Shallow Watering

Adding a splash of water to the surface every day creates a shallow moisture zone that encourages roots to grow upward instead of deep. Water deeply and thoroughly until water runs from the drainage holes.

Mistake 3: Watering in Direct Afternoon Sun

Watering when the soil is hot can shock roots. The best time to water is morning, when temperatures are cooler.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Drainage

Always empty saucers after watering. Always verify drainage holes are not blocked.

Mistake 5: Forgetting That Pots Affect Drying Time

Terracotta pots are porous and dry faster. Glazed ceramic and plastic retain moisture longer. A plant in terracotta may need watering twice as often as the same plant in a glazed pot.

Mistake 6: Neglecting Outdoor Plants

If you move houseplants outdoors for summer, outdoor conditions dry soil dramatically faster. A plant that needed weekly watering indoors may need water every two to three days outdoors.

Mistake 7: Not Adjusting for Growth

Actively growing plants use more water. A monstera pushing out a new leaf every two weeks is drinking more than the same plant sitting idle in December. If your plant is growing visibly, expect to water more often.

Summer watering is not about more water. It is about better attention.
